How to Choose the Right Pickguard for Your Guitar
Not sure which pickguard fits your guitar? Here's exactly how to identify your make, model, and pickup configuration so your custom pickguard fits the first time.
"How do I know which pickguard will fit my guitar?"
That's the question I answer more than any other. The good news: choosing the right pickguard isn't difficult once you know what to look for. The bad news: there are hundreds of pickguard variations, even on guitars that look almost identical.
Over the years I''ve built pickguards for brand-new Fender Stratocasters, vintage Telecasters, Precision Basses, Jazz Basses, PRS guitars, Squier models, Gibson guitars, and completely custom-built instruments. Here''s everything you should know before ordering your next custom guitar pickguard.
Start With the Guitar Make
The first thing I need to know is who made your guitar. The most common brands I work with include:
- Fender
- Squier
- Gibson
- PRS
Each manufacturer has multiple models, and many of those models have changed over the years. That''s why simply saying "I have a Strat" usually isn''t enough information.
Identify Your Pickup Configuration
This is one of the biggest mistakes people make when ordering a replacement pickguard. A Stratocaster, for example, can have several different pickup layouts:
- SSS — three single coil pickups
- HSS — humbucker with two single coils
- HSH — two humbuckers and one single coil
Telecasters, Precision Basses, Jazz Basses, and many other guitars also come in multiple pickup configurations. The openings in the pickguard have to match the pickups on your guitar. Getting this right is just as important as getting the outside shape correct.
Why Not All Stratocaster Pickguards Are the Same
This surprises a lot of people. You can have two Stratocasters sitting side by side that look almost identical, yet their pickguards won''t interchange. Why? Because manufacturers have changed things over the years, including:
- Screw hole locations
- Pickup spacing
- Control layouts
- Neck pocket dimensions
- Overall outside shape
That''s why buying the cheapest replacement pickguard online sometimes turns into a frustrating project. If the screw holes don''t line up, it doesn''t matter how good the graphic looks.
What If You Don''t Know Exactly What You Have?
Don''t worry — you don''t need to be a guitar expert. If you''re unsure about your guitar model, I can usually figure it out with a few photos. If there''s still any doubt, I may ask you for one of two things.
Option One — Trace Your Existing Pickguard
This is one of the easiest methods. Remove your existing pickguard and trace it on a sheet of paper. Include all of the screw holes and pickup openings. A good trace tells me almost everything I need to know.
Option Two — Mail Me Your Existing Pickguard
If you''d rather be absolutely certain, you can simply mail me your existing pickguard. I''ll use it as the template for your new custom pickguard. Once the new one is complete, I''ll return your original along with your custom-made replacement. This eliminates almost all of the guesswork.
Can You Make a Pickguard for a Custom Guitar?
Yes. In fact, some of my favorite projects have been completely custom guitars. If you have accurate drawings, templates, or your existing pickguard, I can often create a replacement even if your guitar isn''t a production model. Custom guitars deserve custom pickguards.
Materials Matter
Not every pickguard has to be plain white or black. At PickGuard World I offer several different materials, including:
- UV printed acrylic
- Mirror acrylic
- Wood pickguards
- Custom printed graphics
Every guitar has its own personality. Your pickguard should too.
What Makes a Custom Pickguard Different?
Instead of choosing from the same handful of colors available everywhere else, you can personalize your guitar with almost any design you can imagine. Popular choices include:
- American flag graphics
- Wood grain
- Carbon fiber looks
- Marble patterns
- Galaxy themes
- Patriotic artwork
- Abstract art
- Flames
- Vintage graphics
- Original artwork
Have your own design? Great — I can usually print that too. The only exception is copyrighted or trademarked artwork I don''t have permission to reproduce, such as pro sports team logos and many commercial brands.
How Are PickGuard World Pickguards Made?
Every custom pickguard starts with an accurate template. Once the design is finalized, I print the artwork directly onto the material using professional UV printing technology. This produces vibrant colors, sharp detail, and graphics that simply aren''t possible with traditional pickguards.
After printing, each pickguard is precision cut on a CO₂ laser. Laser cutting produces clean edges, accurate pickup openings, and precise screw hole placement. The result is a custom pickguard built to look great and fit correctly.
How Long Does It Take?
Most custom pickguards are completed within 3 to 4 business days. Because every order is made individually, you''re not getting something pulled off a warehouse shelf — you''re getting a pickguard built specifically for your guitar.
What If It Doesn''t Fit?
This is the biggest concern customers have. Here''s my philosophy: if I have accurate information — factory drawings, a verified template, your existing pickguard, or a good trace — I will do everything I can to make sure your new pickguard fits correctly. If something isn''t right, I''ll work with you to make it right. My reputation is worth far more than one sale.
Final Thoughts
A custom guitar pickguard is one of the easiest ways to completely transform the look of your instrument. Whether you''re restoring an old favorite, building a one-of-a-kind stage guitar, or replacing a worn-out pickguard, taking a few extra minutes to identify the correct model and pickup configuration can save a lot of frustration later.
If you''re not sure what your guitar needs, don''t guess. Send me a few photos, trace your existing pickguard, or mail me the original. I''d much rather spend a little extra time helping you get the right pickguard than have you order the wrong one. That''s how custom work should be done.
