You’ve Pictured the Look in Your Head. Now Try Finding Someone Who Can Make It.
A truly custom pickguard starts with more than choosing a color. Learn how to turn a specific idea, photograph, or piece of artwork into a part that fits your guitar.

You can see the finished guitar in your mind. You know the colors, the mood, and which part of the image should sit near the bridge. You may even have the perfect photograph or artwork ready.
Then comes the difficult part: finding someone who can turn that idea into a real pickguard—and make it fit the guitar.
Custom Means More Than Choosing From a Color Chart
Many replacement parts are sold as custom because the buyer can select a color, layer count, or pickup arrangement. Those choices are useful, but they may not be enough when you have a specific visual idea.
A one-of-a-kind custom guitar pickguard may begin with:
- A family, pet, travel, or landscape photograph
- Original art or a commissioned illustration
- A vintage sign, map, or meaningful object
- A pattern, material, or color combination that is hard to find
- A concept that needs cropping and positioning around pickups and controls
The image is only one half of the job. The other half is turning it into a durable, properly fitted guitar part.
Look for a Maker Who Handles Fit and Artwork
A useful conversation with a custom pickguard maker should cover both the guitar and the design. Be ready to identify the model, year or production era, pickup layout, controls, and any modifications. If there is no dependable factory drawing, the original guard may need to become the template.
For the artwork, discuss image quality and placement. Pickup openings, knobs, switches, and screws will interrupt parts of the picture. A strong design accounts for those openings instead of discovering them after printing.
Our configurator lets you place and move the image directly on a pickguard preview. When the layout is captured with the order, our workshop receives a visual proof of what you saw on screen.
Ask How the Design Is Produced
Not every decorated pickguard is made the same way. Ask whether the artwork is printed as part of the finished surface or applied as a temporary sticker. Also ask how the maker protects the print, checks color and resolution, and verifies the cut before production.
At PickGuard World, we UV print custom artwork and laser cut the pickguard in our own workshop. Keeping those steps together helps us compare the printed design, the approved placement, and the physical template before the part ships.
Make the Idea Easy to Understand
You do not need professional design language. Share the image, name the colors or details that matter most, and explain what must remain visible. Reference photos can help. So can a simple sentence such as, “Keep the dog’s face between the pickups,” or, “Put the sunset above the bridge.”
The right maker should help translate that intention into placement decisions—not ask you to imagine the result from a filename alone.
The Point Is to Build the Guitar You Pictured
A custom pickguard sits at the meeting point of art and fit. It needs to express the idea in your head, survive normal playing, and line up with the instrument in your hands.
If you have been searching for someone who can make the look you pictured, start with the guitar details and the image. We can help bring the two together.
